It can be very difficult caring for someone long term. As well as the physical demands it can become very stressful, especially if you are caring for someone you live with.

It is important to look after yourself as well, as if you become ill through stress or overwork you will not be able to do any caring. This may make sense in theory. But for carers, it can be difficult to take a step back,

Carers need support as well. Most important is to talk to someone about this and there are several options available:

  • Make use of your existing friends and family, The can help provide both practical help and someone to talk to
  • Support groups for carers – meeting or talking with others who understand your situation is often helpful and there may be groups local to where you live
  • Carers UK (www.carersuk.org) provide a phone line or email advice line and their website provides useful material to read
  • Get counselling help for yourself – talking with a qualified counsellor can help you reduce your stress levels and stop feeling so alone and isolated from long-term caring.
